8th Grade Awards & Scholarships
Eighth grade award and scholarship recipients will be announced at the 8th Grade Awards Ceremony on Monday, May 19, 2025.
Fr. Jim Balint Scholarship
Father Jim Balint, the founding pastor of Prince of Peace Catholic Church, has his footprint and wisdom sprinkled throughout the school. Fr. Jim loved our students, their willingness to learn, and their YES to grow as children of God. This scholarship exemplifies a student who shows Christian service by giving back to their community, as well as leadership and academics and helps ensure the recipient’s continuation of his or her Catholic education. Students submit an essay to apply.
Tyus Hill Scholarship
Tyus Hill is a POP Class of 2016 graduate, Jesuit College Preparatory School alumnus, and a current senior at the University of North Texas. Tyus's time at POP molded him into a passionate hard worker and lover of life. In spite of living with Muscular Dystrophy and using a wheelchair full-time, he is impossibly optimistic and hopeful. Tyus asks applicants for the Tyus Hill Scholarship to describe something they are passionate about and how it has impacted their lives and others.
Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Scholarship
Jeff and Eileen Sherman, parishioners since 2003 with three children that attended Prince of Peace Catholic School, established the Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) scholarship. RAK started in the spring of 2015 with twelve 6th grade students. In 2016, the RAK program was expanded to all students in 6th-8th grade. The RAK scholarship recognizes one-eighth grade graduate who has participated in a RAK group this past year and will attend a Catholic high school in the Dallas Diocese for the 2024-2025 school year. The scholarship will have a one-time monetary value of $1,000 to be used for the student’s tuition and will be paid directly to the high school.
Allyson Bohannon Goldman Memorial Fund Scholarship
Steve and Sharon Bohannon, parishioners, alumni family, and former Prince of Peace Catholic School faculty, have established the Allyson Bohannon Goldman Memorial Scholarship. Allyson attended POP and went on to graduate from UA. This scholarship opportunity is for any Prince of Peace girl planning to attend Ursuline Academy of Dallas. This significant one-time gift will go towards tuition at UA.
Henry Anthony Punzi II Memorial Scholarship
POP family and parishioners Dr. Henry Punzi, Donna, and daughters Presley and Contessa have established the Henry Anthony Punzi II Memorial Scholarship fund in memory of Contessa’s twin brother. Hank would’ve attended Prince of Peace Catholic School and graduated alongside Contessa as a member of the POP Class of 2024. This scholarship opportunity is for any POP eighth grader planning to attend a Catholic high school in the fall of 2024. The scholarship will have a one-time monetary value of $1,000 to be used for the student’s tuition and will be paid directly to the high school. Students who would like to apply for the scholarship need to complete a short essay to be reviewed by the Punzi family.
Christian Leadership Award
Faculty members identify the recipient of this prestigious award, and the honoree is recognized for both their leadership and service. This student leads by example, is eager to assist others, and demonstrates an outstanding attitude.
Excellence in Service Award
The recipient of the Excellence in Service Award exemplifys the true meaning of a servant leader who demonstrates the ability to serve beyond expectations and displays a passion for service.
GRIT & Innovation Awards
The GRIT & Innovation Awards acknowledge students who have embraced 21st century skills. According to researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, grit is defined as "perseverance and passion for long-term goals.” Grit involves working strenuously toward challenges, maintaining effort and interest over years despite obstacles. At POP, we have identified the characteristics of a student exemplifying GRIT as demonstrating: a Growth mindset; Responsibility; Integrity; and Tenacity.
Innovation Award
The Innovation Award recognizes students for their innovative work through project-based learning done in the Cube, the Tech Lab, and in the classroom. The modern curriculum extends past textbooks, homework, and tests. Students are asked to present knowledge in new and creative ways, and through collaborative efforts with classmates.
Scholar-Athlete Award
The POP Star Scholar-Athlete Award is given to two eighth grade students, a male and female, who are outstanding in the classroom as well as in the athletic arena. Recipients of this award demonstrate hard work, determination, perseverance, kindness, positivity, and teamwork in all their endeavors.
Excellence in Attendance Award
The Excellence in Attendance Award honors students with outstanding attendance both during the school year and throughout their years at POP.

Subject Awards
It's POP tradition to recognize a student who has gone above and beyond in the specified discipline.
